AN OLDIE - FOR SURE

This old place in Germany is now a car dealership. How sad.

A friend let me paint the photo which her husband had taken in the early fifties. I'd hoped to capture the charm of the place but think my lack of experience shows a lot in this painting, painted maybe 15 years ago.

Comparing how far you've come as an artist is a good thing. One instructor said to never toss out your old paintings, but to store them under the bed to check later. My bed would have to be VERY high off the ground if I had kept all the old ones.

I did frame a lot of paintings that probably should still be under the bed. At the time, they were the best I could possibly do.

The key to improving is to paint, and to paint, and to paint. Better brushes, more colors, and great books and teachers may all help, but unless that brush is working, skills can't improve.

Sandy, I can see why you would be ashamed of this painting, it is totally shabby! NOT! It is lovely and done with a light touch and I love the velvety look of that roof. I see how much farther I have to go when I see your first efforts and only wish I could do this well now, after nine years of painting. This is so nice.

LOL, my nose would be touching the ceiling too!

I am so glad I found your blog - you have some superb paintings, old and new.

This one is very atmospheric - no way can I imagine it being a car dealership!

Although this isn't your style now, Sandy, it's still a lovely painting :) It shows how much you've changed and how much more colorful you've become!

I like your post, how true. Old or not, this is awfully darn good, I'd be happy to sign my name to it. And what a charming little place it is - I want to live there!
