GRATE ART

This painting is a result of my love of taking photos of what's under my feet. In Italy and Switzerland, I was fascinated with the grates in the walkways and streets and decided they all had to be incorporated into one painting.

Created on YUPO with fluid acrylics, this painting was my favorite one I did during the last couple of days of independent study at our North Carolina workshop.

The past four days here have been jam packed with instruction from an AWS artist, Janet Rogers. This morning's class enjoyed watching her paint a beautiful bouquet of roses, then Rhonda drove her to the airport. Next, Janet and her husband, Steve, are teaching in Key West. It was a very special weekend.

That is so much fun and interesting! I too have a fascination for those and photographs of 'grates' from all over :) but I have not done anything with them.

This one looks even more impressive in person, Sandy! A definite show-stopper, whether you enter it in the show or not. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to spend a little more time with Janet, to and from places yesterday where we chatted the whole time about painting!

Absolutely wonderful! Are you thinking of entering it in a show?

What a fantastci idea, and what a stunning result!!!! I love it! It could have been depressing, or crowded, but it's actually quite merry and soft and even soothing!

Sandy, I have seen your work on Myrna Wacknov's blog and today took the time to come here. Absolutely stunning! You are so creative and accomplished with water media. I am especially taken with your Amsterdam-inspired piece featuring bicycles. I love to ride and am always fascinated by what a good artist can do with such a lovely mechanical wonder.

Good to hear from you, Vicki, and thanks for the support.

Meera, I think the mood has to hit to paint these. I had o idea what I was going to do with them until the pencil was on the YUPO.

Ann and Chris,
Thanks for your comments. So glad you like it too.

Rhonda, THANK YOU for being so helpful to get Janet to the airport. She's such a treasure to be with, as are YOU!

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for the encouragement about entering into a show...but I only enter one show a year, if that. Love to paint, hate to go through the dance of entering stuff, delivering or shipping it, etc.

Cathy, It was a challenge to design this, and I had to leave out several grates that were pretty cool. May have to paint another so I can use the extras. Thanks so much for your comments.

Mary, welcome. WOW - you rode a bike from San Jose up into Oregon! Whew. Enjoyed your blog and seeing how diverse you are. Keep painting.

This is sooooooooooo gorgeous! I love your use of colour, Sandy. That's what I'm always drawn to first in your paintings. Then my eyes start wandering around looking at the actual subject matter, which is always so innovative and beautiful, too.

What an inspirational person you are...what a grate(sorry) idea!
Too often we try to become inspired by a magnificent topic, but miss what is interesting, challenging and exciting all around us ...in this case underfoot.
